Sasebo — a port town on the western edge of Japan that grew, abruptly and misshapenly, into a base town where the U.S. Navy is stationed and a shipbuilding town driving Japan's postwar economic miracle. In this town where the photographer was born and raised, this book gathers black-and-white portraits of the people around him and its landscapes.
Tokyo and Sasebo, past and present, image and reality, the far side of the photograph and the near — these 78 images were made between 2023 and 2026, moving back and forth across the many shores that divide and face one another.
Includes the essay Premonition of Ruin in Japanese and English. Inlaid on the cover is a mirror plate that reflects the world on the other side.
